Local Housing Trust Workshop Scheduled

Communities can learn about maintaining and increasing their supply of affordable housing at an upcoming workshop Tuesday, April 13, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., co-sponsored by the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission and the Massachusetts Housing Partnership.

The workshop, which will be held at PVPC’s office at 60 Congress Street in Springfield, will address how municipalities can create municipal affordable housing trusts, what the powers of a trust are, and examples of trust activities. Participants will also receive a new guidebook by MHP that explains strategies for setting up a trust and gaining approval from the local legislative body.

Communities have shown interest in forming municipal housing trusts due to passage of a 2005 law granting local authority to create such trusts and availability of local funding resources such as the Community Preservation Act. Workshop presenters Jennifer Goldson of JMGoldson Consulting, attorney Kathleen O’Donnell, and Jayne Bernhard-Armington of the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission all have experience helping communities set up successful local housing trusts.

To register for this free workshop or for more information, call Connie Kruger, MHP Senior Program Manager, at (617) 330-9944 ext. 281 or (413) 253-7379 ext. 11. Coffee and baked goods will be available at the start of the workshop.
