GPS Mapping Workshop to be Held for Municipal Officials
The Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, will host a Global Positioning System (GPS) mapping workshop for municipal officials Wednesday, May 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at PVPC’s office at 60 Congress Street in Springfield.
The workshop is specifically tailored to mapping municipal storm sewer systems and other publicly owned water and wastewater infrastructure. The workshop will provide hands-on training utilizing GPS units to efficiently create digital maps for integration into municipal mapping databases.
Specially designated municipalities known as MS4s (municipal small storm sewer systems) are required to map their stormwater systems under their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Stormwater Permit program. GPS mapping of the municipal system is an efficient way to gather the required information and develop a useful tool that the municipality can use for local planning and to meet their permit requirements. To register for the workshop, contact Deb Cohen at EPA at (617) 918-1145 or go to http://www.epa.gov/region1/gpsworkshopmay25.html.
